Focus on People
The main idea: Managing people is a key success element for managers.
Three things to learn and practice
1. People respond well to good quality attention.
Activity Next time you are talking with a member of your team, spend the first few moments in really attending to them: who they are, how they sound, and what they are wanting you to know.
Why this matters
Human beings are designed to respond to good quality attention. This doesn't mean losing sight of the purpose and duties of their job: it does mean treating them as the individual they are.
2. Individuals have different preferences in how they operate
Activity. Watch your team at work, and notice their different styles. Discuss methods and approaches in your team meetings, so that you ensure that people are working at their best. Remember that yours isn't the only way of doing things.
Why this matters
Individuals have different preferences in how they take on new tasks, and in the kind of work that they prefer to do. People work best when they are in the style that works for them: if they need to take on a new style, they will need attention and coaching.
3. You have to earn the respect of the team
Activity. From the start, be honest and authentic with your team. Do your job well and show that you understand theirs. Show that you respect and care for them.
Why this matters
Staff need to feel confidence in their manager if they are to work at their best. As well as this, you are sure to make some mistakes when you start with a new team. If your team feel that you support them and have their interests at heart, they can help you through those mistakes.
It's not necessary to spend a lot of time with
people - it's the quality of your attention that
matters.
Another useful idea You need some attention too. Take a few minutes to review how you're feeling right now, what you're thinking about, whether your muscles are relaxed or tense. This quiet moment can help you focus more effectively on the task in hand and the people involved.
