Newsletter 6 - Making Decisions Effectively

Having to make decisions for a team can be scary, especially if it's not something you've done before. How can you get to be a good decision-maker?

Before you start you should know what the decision is finally meant to achieve or deliver. As well as this, you need the right amount of good information, a clear idea of your criteria and a sensible range of options.

Information - "not too much and not too little" is the key here. Don't confuse yourself with too much, but don't neglect information that will really make a difference to what you decide.

Criteria - what are the factors that the decision must cover? What will make it feel like a good decision after it's done?

Options - be sure to include all the options in your thinking, even the ones that may seem unattractive at the start. It may be true that 'not deciding now' is also an option.

When you're making a decision, consider the people involved. You may need to include plans to consult the people involved, share your ideas and work hard to get 'buy-in'.

A decision made without considering how it will affect individuals is likely to be unsuccessful, even if it seems like a good choice at the time.
