Little things may matter more than you think.....


It's easy to neglect the little things: some of them may grow, or may be a sign of an underlying problem. If you pay attention to what's really going on with the individuals and the team, you may save yourself some trouble.

 

Check your ideas with the examples below.

The messy microwave

 

 

The story here could be seen as a minor irritation. As a manager you might dismiss it, as does Mike in the story.

 

Look and think again. There are at least three possible serious issues that might arise: can you spot them? Without escalating the situation, what should Mike say to Jimmy? and what if anything should he do?

The chatty team

a manager has a team who chat together, excluding him. They look resentful.

 

Phil has just taken over a bright young team. He's depressed about their general attitude - they like each other much more than they seem to like their work. He's worried that they'll think he's being petty if he challenges them.

 

How would you advise him?
