Motivating your staff
"How can I get them motivated?" Many new managers are put in charge of a team where the individuals have lost their motivation and their performance has dropped. It's a tough challenge, but one that is worth dealing with because your reputation is enhanced if you succeed, and you learn a great deal in the process.
People are motivated by various things, which will be dealt with on the members pages in more detail. Here are the basics that you need to work through to get started.
1. Be sure that everyone knows what they are meant to be doing and what the successful results should look like. This may seem obvious but its always worth looking at.
2. Be sure that everyone in the team has the resources they need to do the job effectively - and this includes time.
3. Be sure that everyone gets accurate, specific and timely feedback on how they are doing.
4. Find out what they like about the job, what they don't like, and what their ideas are about how they could all deliver better results.
5. Avoid looking for someone to blame, and avoid conversations with staff about "whose fault it is." Stick to ideas about how to improve.
Generally speaking, when people are treated fairly and are delivering good work that is appreciated, their motivation improves. If you have the five points above in place and working well, then youwill need to go further. It will be worth becoming a member, getting your free coaching, viewing the members pages and joining the forum to see what others have tried.
