Basic management concepts

What does management consist of? You can look at it in three ways. These can be seen as three ways to focus, three key sets of concepts. When you are managing well, you will be attending effectively to all three. You may find that you are better in one area than another - you should work hard to keep the balance between -

 

* focusing on outcomes
* focusing on people
* focusing on communication.

 

There are other areas that you may need to develop such as managing a budget, understanding legislation, project management, appraising your staff and managing their performance. These will be covered in response to specific questions.

 

But if you get very clear and effective about the basic concepts, you have an excellent start.
