Management essentials
As a new manager, you will need to take on a lot in a short time. This means that you need to be a smart learner, to be aware of your own patterns, and to understand what it takes to manage a transition effectively.
Here are some of the basics. (Follow the links for more)
When you are managing well, you will be:-
* focusing on outcomes
* focusing on people
* focusing on communication.
Keep all three in mind as you move into your new role.
Sorting out your priorities so as to manage your time will be essential
Dealing effectively with your staff, including motivating and delegating can be your first challenge. Having effective team meetings is an important ingredient of your success in this.
Understanding the organisation (including your own manager and the teams that you liaise with or whose work depends on you) is another key piece of learning for you.
There are other areas that you will need to develop such as managing a budget, understanding legislation, project management, appraising your staff and managing their performance. These will be your next steps.
